Mobile Working - How to stay safe on the move

As more and more employees are working away from the office, at home, at client sites or even on the road, it questions the security of data on the move. Not to mention the number of stories about theft and loss of mobile devices, which scored third of the most common security incidents behind virus infection and insider attacks.

Mobility brings data security to the forefront and as a result, companies are recognising they need to do more to keep their mobile data secure as well as recognising that employees may use non-corporate devices for work and corporate devices for social activities.

In this instance, Network Defence can provide strong authentication and cryptography technology to ensure sensitive data remains secure, providing complete confidentiality for transmitted information and protecting mobile computing devices against theft or data loss.

Spam is here to stay!

One of the most common external threats that keep cropping up is the issue of spam. It may not be as big an issue as it once was, but is that because we have simply become numb to it? We have gotten used to it? The fact of the matter is that spam is not going away.

It is thought an average 2.25 spam emails get through each day of which workers are wasting a minute a day based on an average of 30 seconds per email. Whilst that doesn’t sound much, those lost minutes could cost a firm of a thousand workers some £131,940 in lost productivity – it can all add up.

But lost productivity isn’t the only cost to firms as they must also pay for security and archive more email because of spam.

That being said, if you like most businesses experiencing an increased volume of spam, Network Defence can provide you with a more resilient and capable solution which not only eliminates the problem of spam, but addresses further issues of email management; security, continuity and archiving managed in a single online system.

Police force loses memory stick

In yet another report of a lost data stick, endpoint security is becoming evermore popular, but for the wrong reasons. The USB memory stick containing 750 entries on vehicles “of interest” to police had been reported missing late December, early January this year in Edinburgh.

It has been said the loss did not compromise anyone involved in any ongoing or previous police investigations.

It seems the information on the data stick was not encrypted as it was being transferred within the organisations headquarters. This incident has prompted Lothian and Borders Police to look into how they hold and transfer data from within their organisation.

At Network Defence, we can offer encryption technologies to safeguard the information your company holds ensuring security from within and outside your organisation.

Security for endpoint systems should be a priority

It is becoming more and more apparent that the data PC’s, laptops and remote systems may carry is at risk and companies should be using the necessary controls required to secure it. However, it is claimed that too many organisations are oblivious to that fact and are missing the point when it comes to endpoint security.

It seems companies are more concerned about their critical systems, servers and databases that hold their most sensitive data as opposed to endpoint systems where now, the greatest vulnerabilities exist.

Systems at any point on the network, within and outside of the data centre ought to be protected to the same level of controls, not only applying anti-virus controls, but acknowledging other concerns such as configuration, application control and patching requirements.

Network Defence offers a range of endpoint security solutions to control the state of security and not allowing the endpoint to remain an open door to the organisation.

Hospital leaves 'back door' open for attack

You may remember a computer virus attack which infiltrated three London hospitals last November, shutting down their computer systems for at least 24 hours. The latest news review from an independent IT consultant states the viral attack was due to anti-virus not being implemented properly.

The Trust’s virus protection, updated on a daily basis did not reach all PC’s prior to the attack and those PC’s it did reach, some of which were not configured correctly. As a result, this left the ‘back door’ open for the virus to infiltrate the network via email. The incident was deemed as “entirely avoidable”.

At Network Defence we can provide you with the latest content security solutions and perimeter security solutions including IDS and IPS systems to ensure your networks remain secure and protected, blocking any attacks before reaching the business networks.
